Astronomers Listen Up - Be Prepared For January 31st

Wednesday January 31st is an exciting evening for astronomers & photographers. There will be a Full Moon, Blue Moon, Supermoon and total lunar eclipse!

On the 31st, the moon will be on the opposite side of the Earth as the Sun and have a totally lit-up face, creating the Full Moon. It will be the second Full Moon in the same month (a previous Full Moon was on January 2nd) and therefore this is referred to as the Blue Moon.

A Supermoon is when the Moon is closest to the Earth and so appears larger and brighter than normal, a great opportunity to capture some stunning nightscapes!

As if this wasn't enough, there will also be a total eclipse which occurs when the Moon travels entirely through Earth's shadow. The Moon will become darker and then gain a red colouring. This total eclipse will only be visible from North America, East Asia, Australia and the Pacific Ocean.
